CSCI 257: Fundamental UNIX System Administration

Class Project for Spring 2003

The goal of the class project is to provide students with practical experience to administer Linux installation and administration on a computer shared with Windows.

Laboratory Assignment 1 for January 29, 2003

ASSIGNMENT DUE: 12:00 NOON, FEBRUARY 5, 2003.

Assignment Description:

As a system administrator, there will be times when solutions to problems appear to be not available or not possible, especially from the manufacturer of the system.  This assignment will  introduce the students to the wealth of information on Linux on the Web and to some of the basic ideas behind Linux.

Goal:

The goal of this assignment is to introduce students to Linux.

Objectives:

• Locate information and software on the Web.
• Learn about the licensing of Linux.
• Learn about the orgins of Linux.
  

Expected Outcome:

• The student will do the following:
• Read An Introduction to Linux
• Who wrote the Linux kernel?
  
• Read the preamble of the GNU General Public License (GPL)
• Read What is Copyleft?
• What is copyleft?
  
• Visit the Linux Documentation Project (also CSU Chico has a mirror http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/LDP/)
• Check out the list of Guides and HOWTO's
  
• Visit http://www.kernel.org/
• What is the latest stable version of the Linux kernel?
• Visit http://www.opensource.org/
• What is the definition of "Open Source"?
• What are some open source licenses?
  
• Visit http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html
• What is "Free Software"?
• Can you sell "Free Software"?
• Locate 5 good websites for getting information on Linux
  
• TURN-IN
• print out the lab1 question sheet, answer the questions on it and turn it in to your TA.
