Reef Sector
Our reef exhibits have spectacular viewings of the beautiful coral reefs, seagrasses,
mangroves, sponge gardens, muddy seabeds, and all additional ocean life. Come and explore
our reef sector and learn more about the importance of reefs to our ocean.

- The Importance of Coral Reefs
- Although coral reefs occupy only 0.7% of the ocean floor, they provide homes and critical nursery grounds for a quarter of all marine species on the planet.
- Coral reefs support over 4,000 different species of fish, nearly 700 species of coral, and several other plants and animals.
- They are responsible for building The famous Great Barrier Reef, one of the largest biological structures in the world.

What About Seagrasses?
Seagrasses are quite common on the coral reefs. Most of them inhabit the sandy
bottoms of lagoons, while seagrasses grow at the base of the outer reef crest. Only one particular
species growns in Australia (Thallosodendron Ciliatumon), which grows on the bare rock
surfaces such as dead coral and exposed limestone. Seagrasses are generally more prevelant
on the sheltered parts of the reefs, as they cannot withstand high wave-action. Seagrasses are
not very conspicuous, due to the fact they are vigorously grazed by many fish, dugongs and turtles.
