Predator Sector

Scared of sharks, rays, or skates?  Then don't venture to the Predator exhibit.  But if you're brave, get up close and personal with all three and come witness feeding time and dive shows.

One hundred and sixty five shark species, slightly less than half the world total, are found in Australian waters.  Sharks in Australia range in size from the 27 cm Pygmy shark to the 12+ m Whale shark, largest of all fishes.  Sharks are found in most parts of the ocean, from the surface to depths of more than 2000 m and from mid-ocean waters to the shallows off almost every coast in the world.  In tropical Australia, sharks swim many kilometers into fresh water.  Come see both the Pygmy shark and the Whale shark as well as the infamous Great White!

You'll be able to learn about several species of Rays.  For example, see the White-spotted Eagle Ray which has an angular disc with white spots on top.  The snout can vary in shape from a spade-like shape of juveniles to pointed in large individuals.  The whip-like tail has 2-6 spines.  This species grows to at least 3.5 m disc width and 8.8 m total length.

Also see several species of skates (relatives of the Ray), such as the Thornback Skate and the Melbourne Skate.

Come and get close to these predators, if you DARE!
