Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires
Inspiration

The inspiration for this scene came with the idea to challenge us to do something new and exciting.  We decided on a campfire scene because it required some advanced Lightwave techniques like creating trees and fire. This type of scene also gave us a lot of room to be creative and make it look any way we wanted.  There was also no shortage of objects needed for the scene so we knew it would keep everyone busy right up until the due date

Problems and Solutions

During the creation of this scene, we did not run across any “major” problems, but with a project of this size and complexity, some issues did arise.  While creating the campfire for our scene, the Viper tool enabled us to view the volumetric fire in real-time.  The only problem was that the Viper render was extremely different from the standard render Lightwave produced. This problem was never solved; we just had to use the regular Lightwave rendering system until the fire looked the way we wanted.

Another problem we came across was the tent object.  Modeling it was not a problem, but it had so many polygons that it increased overall render time significantly.  We eventually used the qemLOSS tool to reduce the polygon count.

Another surprise came when we tried to use the SasLite plugin to create grass on the ground.  SasLite would not draw the grass that was behind any transparency-mapped object.  We had to go without grass since we couldn’t find any way to overcome this.

The only other problem we ran into was an issue when going between Lightwave 7.0 and Lightwave 7.5.  There was a conflict with plugins that would not allow us to open our scene file.  Activating all of the plugins before trying to load the scene eventually solved this problem.
