Inspiration

Our story inspiration was based on having some thing similar to World War 2; we wanted to create a living picture of what would be like being in a place of war.

Problems and Solutions

Problems
While building the mesh for the Corsair, the hardest part was building the spline cages.  The wings were fairly easy; using a schematic in the background of the viewer window, I was able to trace out the points and create the spline, and then cover with a spline patch.  On the first tries, holes where the polygons didn’t cover completely caused problems, but increasing the polygon number for each patch helped.  The next hardest part was the center of the plane, especially where the cockpit joined the body.  It was supposed to be a smooth transition from the cockpit section to the main section, but a little overlap can be seen when viewed from a tight angle.  All other parts were fairly straight forward, including the stenciling of the insignias and squadron numbers on the body.

Problems
The palm tree leaves were the hardest part.  Though, the magic bevel tool worked wonders as soon as I figured out how to use it.  This is not as easy as it may sound, I had to experiment with this tool for a while to get the shapes right.  First I had to make the stem, which I used a square and magic beveled it at the right percentage and angle.  Then I took the polygons on the sides and magic beveled them out at the right percentage and angle.  The one thing that was hardest about this is that I had to change the percent of the tool down more every five bevels or so.  Which meant that I had to deselect the magic bevel tool and then reselect, it after that I could change the percentage.  If I were to it do any other way all of the bevels would change with it and they would look weird.  So after doing this, I just made three palm leaves and put them together on top of a tree trunk that I modeled.  This then led to adding some coconuts, which of course were very simple.  After that it when to textures, so for now were simple except for the leaves.  They were hard because it took time to select the right sections of the leaves for different textures.

Problems
Coming to grips that creating realistic scaling over large masses of land is quite difficult.  Texturing is still something that I need to spend a little more time working on.  Thus I had to go with what was offered by lightwave and modify them slightly.  This was a challenge and I enjoyed it.  I'll definitely be budgeting more time into the final project.  I also found that once I'd implement one part of the model, there would be a flaw in another, such as needing more from one area versus another or having more area to provide depth in the final render.  Quite interesting.

Problems
The hardest things that I went across would be that in my house I had light wave installed onto my computer, but I had a discovery addition. This was a problem because I could only be able to save 400 point into a layer. That would mean that I had a lot of different pieces of layers saved, and that was not good or fun. There where some occasions that I forgot about that problem, I would continue working on the project and when I got to the end for me to save the project I couldn’t, because there where to many points, so I would have to delete almost all my work and start all over. Another problem that I had had would be on creating the ship. I did not have an idea of how ship whit good details looked. So I went to yahoo and Google so look for pictures so that I could get ideas of a ship. Which I did get a lot of pictures, but the next problem would be which one to use and how would I create them. That required al lot of thinking and decision making. The final problem was making every thin fit where it was supposed to be, and having all the points merge with each other.
The solutions to the problems that I came across would be, for my first problem the solution was that I had to reinstall light wave into my computer once again. The second solution was the same as above, once I had the program reinstall I was able to work better.
Time Frame

Wings: two hours of modeling for the creation of the splines, mirroring of the wing to create the opposite side saved a lot of time

Center section: three hours; mostly spent trying to smooth the transition lines between the upper and lower sections

Rudder / Ailerons: ½ hour; after the wings these were easier to do

Stenciling: 1 hour; mostly positioning the stencils

On this project I (Isidro) spent a lot of time, I am estimating like around more then eight hours not including the hours spent on class time.

A large sum of time spent on trying to achieve something similar to what I (Ken) had in mind concerning the size, shape and depth for the land mass.  Time and time again I found myself remaking it.  Hours, upon hours.  Then approximately 2 hours setting things up to be used in layout, and another 1-2 hours to place objects within the scene.

Modeling the leaves took the longest.  Trying to get the right shapes and textures were very time consuming.  Though, I (Emerson) tried to make more than just the palm tree and could not get that all done.  I spent altogether about 9-10 hours on leaves, 2-3 hours on tree trunks & plant stems, 30 minutes on coconuts, and 3-4 hours on just textures.  With a 3-5 more hours I could have two more kinds of plants, I think, though I did not have the time now.  Then my group member Ken did the lighting because he built the surrounding scene.
