Ashley Kremenliff Final Scene
 Batter Up
Inspiration

With the reappearance of the sun last month, my boyfriend and I had started making trips to Fun Land, the local batting cages here in Chico.  I’m not the greatest softball player so I tend to hit the ball directly over my head and when I do this I’m always afraid that the ball is going to come back down and hit me on the head.  Because I have a huge batting helmet on my head, I can never see where exactly the ball has gone to in these situations.  It was because of this that I decided to create a scene located at a batting cage, taken from the perspective of the batter underneath these gigantic batting helmets.

Problems and Solutions

The biggest problem I encountered was creating the alpha mapping to create transparent textures.  When creating the chain link alpha map, I had to re-do the alpha channels several times in order to create the look I wanted.  It was more difficult than I anticipated maintaining a 3D effect on the fence that’s closest to the camera.  It also created some unusual shadows and forced me to turn up the lighting in order to make sure enough light was getting through the scene.  I also found that I spent so much time trying to get the fence to look right, that I ran out of time with trying to make the pitching machine look the way I wanted.
