Ben Hawkins Final Scene
 Destiny Waits
Inspiration

I am currently in the process of writing a fantasy novel, and the main character uses a sword called the 'Talon'.  The sword that I modelled for this scene.  I drew the sword out in AutoCAD several years ago and had always wanted to see it in 3D.  This project gave me the perfect opportunity to try and make it happen.  The scene is simple, but it captures the feeling of that part of the story, where the blade is waiting for the hero to come and claim it.

Problems and Solutions

I had a hell of a time trying to model certain parts of the sword.  It's no wonder I couldn't get any of my friends to render it for me!  I eventually had to get down and do nitty-gritty point-manipulation, and it turned out 'O-K', but I honestly wish I could have done it better.

I suppose one of my main problems was finding a good camera angle that would make a really great shot.  Sadly, I don't think I ever solved that one...

I tried for quite awhile to model a feather, but it just wasn't happening.  Then, much to my overjoy, Garret Smith did a tutorial on compositing and transparency mapping!  It let me use a high-res photo of a feather and just project it onto a simple rectangle.  I still had some problems with the rectangles showing through in the render... but otherwise the tutorial worked great.  Find it here: http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/ ~ranger/samples/ CSCI140/tutorialsS05/ GarretSmithTutorial/index.html
