Michael Crabtree Final Scene
 Vacation Time
Inspiration

At first I couldn’t decide on what to do for my final project.  I kicked around some ideas, but they were all out of my skill level.  Then, as I was flipping through some old photos, I cam across some boat pictures and an idea struck.  I thought I could model a realistic version of the boat, then throw it into an awesome scene of rolling waves, storm clouds, driving rain, the whole nine yards.  However, once I started, I quickly realized that I had bitten off more than I could chew.  The modeling on the boat itself turned out to be much harder than I had anticipated.  I was forced to spend more time than expected just getting the main object in the scene done.  As a result, I had to switch the scene to something a little more easy, but still have a nice effect.  So I chose to go with a calm lake scene at late afternoon rather than a stormy ocean.  Although I had to compromise, I am pleased with the result.

Problems and Solutions

1. TIME, TIME, TIME, TIME TIME!!!
Solution: Either pick an easier topic, or PLAN, PLAN, PLAN!

2. Getting the boat to resemble the picture.
Solution: Put a picture of the boat on a polygon in the background of one of the layers, and use it for a guide.

3. Getting the textures right on the boat.
Solution: I couldn’t get the UV mapping to look right for adding the striping on the boat, so due to time constraints, I left it white and gave it a glossy finish.

4. Getting the water to look realistic.
Solution: I used a very helpful tutorial which is shown at the bottom.  Although I had to tweak the setting a little, it provided me with a good start.

5. Trying to get the modeled mountains in th background to look realistic.
Solution:  I simply placed a clip-mapped image on a backdrop to create the desired effect.
