Josh Burke Final Scene
 Desolate Silo
Inspiration

The inspiration for my project comes from my trips home to the Bay Area.  All along I-5 there are towering grain (I assume) silos.  I am fascinated and can never take in enough visual information.  I have the urge to get out and take pictures of them, but have no acted upon that.  So for my scene I wanted to put a silo in a environment it would not normally be in.  That scene happened to be a snowy landscape.

Textures and Images

All the textures on the silos came from the free stuff section at NewTek, located here: http://www.newtek.com/freestuff/

All other textures came from Lightwave

Time Frame

I spent a number of hours trying to tweak Terragen to produce the landscape I wanted.  After that, I spent about 4-5 hours modeling, about 2 hours texturing, about 2 hours for lighting and about 8 hours of experimenting with the particle emitter, the wind effector and the motion blur, which ended up not yielding much in terms of results of the final outcome, but I will continue with this scene and hopefully better it when I have a better grasp on how those tools work.

Problems and Solutions

My first problem came with using Terragen, a program I had not used before this project.  It allows you to create landscapes and then save them as many different file types including as a Lightwave Object file.  The program is pretty basic and it took some figuring out how to sculpt a landscape to my liking.  That was mainly trial and error and took quite a few attempts.  My next problem is still unresolved.  I could not get the particles to follow the wind effector, thus causing them to look like a cartoon version of snow, which upsets me.  I also planned on using motion blur in my scene but could not get it to work in a way which I thought enhanced the scene.  Another problem was the particle emitter, when using it, I set the number really high (in the hundred thousands) while I was trying to achieve the snow effect, because my scene was so big.  When I advanced to the end of the scene to see the maximum number or particles it would freeze up Lightwave.  So I ended up scaling down my landscape and silos so I could then use less particles to achieve the same effect.
