Megan Murphy Desk Scene
 In Shadow
Inspiration

When the time came to pick the idea for our desk scene, I went over numerous possibilities.  As I looked over my past paintings and computer art, I thought I would try to recreate one of the paintings I found.  The painting was entitles, “Interview with the Vampire,” and it was found on an online website that specified in vintage art.  The piece was full of rich color and bathed in a soft candle glow, so naturally I knew this was the right choice.

The candelabra in the painting was detailed and elegant, and although I tried, the desk itself was too detailed to duplicate.  I was trying to portray a sophisticated solitude, and it seemed simple enough to create.  I wish I could have done more to make it appear as it did in the painting, but it was very difficult to recreate the scene I imagined.  The room was made red to represent passion and richness, and the black carpet to represent sorrow.

Problems and Solutions

One of the problems I ran into was creating the objects with the right proportions.  It seemed that everything I created somehow ended up being either larger or smaller than I intended. But it ended up being very easy to correct that in layout.  Also, another problem that I ran into was trying to alter the settings on my light.  Luckily, I was shown that I should have a soft glow instead of the much brighter glare.

Another problem I had early on was that when I made my room shape I wanted to add a carpet, but realized after I had made the room that I had to make a separate piece to create that effect.

Then the other problem was when making the spider webs, I could not get the measurements right and then I kept having problems with the jitter tool.  But in the end I figured it out myself and it turned out pretty well.

Time Frame

The piece that took the most time to construct was the desk, because I used different layers for each piece, and near the end of the project I began to lose track of the pieces.  Also the candleholder took around an hour to create, because I wanted to model it the way the painting had.  I could not seem to get them the way I wanted them to turn out.  I tried using the spline tool numerous times, and still could not reach the desired effect, thereby making it difficult to get anything else done until I got them the right way.

References

I used the tutorial on how to make spider webs from the website.  It was very helpful but left out numerous steps that would have made it easier.  Also the painting “Interview with the Vampire” from online, as well as the textbook.
