Josiah Koons Desk Scene
 Holmes Desk
Inspiration

I was reading a Sherlock Holmes story when the desk scene was assigned, and I thought it would interesting to do a more old style desk. After looking at the previous examples, it became apparent that in order to pull off this assignment with one shot you need instant recognition. I thought that with one shot that was close enough to identify the objects would bring the connection to Holmes. I also admire the care he took in the details, and I wanted to emulate that through this project. If you know anything about Holmes and his personal habits is that the only thing he kept clean and ordered was his brain. I tried to give the appearance of clutterness, along with presenting objects that are identified with Holmes.

Problems and Solutions

The main problem I encountered was my unfamiliarity with the program and its tools. Everything was way more complicated to create then I thought, and even those things, which I created, were not like what I had envisioned in my mind. The other problem, which magnified the first problem, was the lack of time I had to complete the project. Specifically I wanted to create a magnifying glass, which was trademark Sherlock Holmes. Unfortunately, I could create the model but I could figure out how to get it to correctly display itself during the render. Due to the time crunch I had to leave out the magnifying glass, which would have add greatly to the power of the scene. I also wanted to create an atmosphere of clutter on the desk, this was very difficult to accomplish. It took me a while to figure out how to arrange the papers in a way that looked even semi-realistic. I would have liked to have a few books open, papers bent and crumpled, and much more clutter but I couldn’t accomplish this at this time. Lighting was also an issue, when dealing with the lantern. I realistically the lantern should have provided enough light for the scene especially being in so tight. I couldn’t get the right settings though, so I had to add a distant light in the shape of the moon to complement the lantern.
