Crystal Helman Desk Scene
 Contemporary Style
Inspiration

For my desk scene I wanted something that expressed a bit of my personality.  I have always loved contemporary design, containing clean, smooth lines and simplicity.  Furthermore, I wanted to use neutral tones for the room to help achieve the effect I was going for…nothing too harsh.  I thought that a splash of color would be nice for the room, so I added two paintings on the wall.  I have always admired art, particularly Van Gogh’s style, so I placed one of my favorite paintings on the wall.  I wanted the lamp to appear simple as well, so I created a sheer neutral cream shade and silver post.    I did have some really cool cream textured wallpaper but somehow I lost it and ultimately ran out of time.  I tried to make all of the objects resemble items that I would purchase from IKEA, since that is my absolute “favorite” interior decorating store.  I guess you could say that this would be my ideal office, simple and modern with an artsy flare.

Problems and Solutions

I came across a few problems with my desk scene.  One of the biggest problems I encountered was creating the desk shape.  I wanted to create a smooth curvy shape with curved metal legs.  It didn’t seem hard until I actually attempted to create it.  To solve the shape problem I used the spline tool for the desk top.  After I was satisfied with the shape, I made a box with the desired desk thickness.  I placed the spline shape in the box and did a Boolean subtract.  Then I cut all additional polygons.  To achieve t he leg shape, I created boxes with circles beside them and once again, I did a Boolean subtract to obtain the desired curved shape (I think I’m becoming quite fond of that tool).  Another problem was finding the appropriate desk color.  I wanted a specific bleached oak shade, which was very hard to find.  After searching several websites, I settled for the light oak texture.  An additional problem was finding the appropriate lighting since I ran out of time.  I wanted to spend more time on that.  Moreover, I think the big problem was putting the vision in my head onto the computer.  However, I do think that I became a lot more comfortable with the tools while completing this project.
Time Frame

I think majority of my time was spent on creating the actual desk itself.  After that, the objects were pretty simple.  Obtaining the proper texture was another hard part as well.  I spent approximately 12 hours on the entire project.
