| | Inspiration
I work as a draftsman for an architect. The tools we use, including the desk and drafting lamps, are interesting in design, so I wanted to try and render them as real-to-life as possible. As for the title "Working Late" and the late-nite look of the scene, my boss is often pulling all-nighters to get jobs done, so I thought it would be a good stage-set that would also allow me to show off the lighting and shadows better.

| | Problems and Solutions
The main problem I had was working out the lighting. In particular, I was frustrated with the very hard and sharp line at the edge of my lights, created by the shadow of the lamp itself. Looking at my real lamp, the light diffused very evenly and made a nice soft transition. I couldn't quite replicate that in virtual space, but I came somewhat close. To get rid of the hard edge of the shadow cast on the wall, I created a point light, in addition to the spotlight of the lamp, and positioned it just below the lamp's opening. This simulated the light bouncing off of the drafting table and up onto the wall, which I couldn't manage to work otherwise.
Aside from that, the only real problem I had was time. I really would have liked to have put more into the scene, since I had a great vision of it in my head, but you can only do so much I guess. Having Lightwave at home sure helped though!
