| | Inspiration
To be perfectly honest, I think most of the inspiration for this image came from my obsession with the television show, Law & Order. To me, the image of a prison cell represents a life filled with desperation and fleeting hope. To me, prison basically means isolation from most of humanity, always having to take orders from people in positions of power, and stunted by the sensation of never being able to move up in the world. However, I can’t help but think that everything I just described is characteristic of most, if not all, computer science and engineering majors in college. So I guess the message that this scene portrays is not limited to just a prisoner, but to anyone who feels trapped.

| | Problems and Solutions
Lighting – It took me a long time to get the lighting the way I wanted. There are 4 different lights in the scene: 1. Point Light - Outside window for moon light effect. This light was especially difficult to deal with because I initially wanted to make it a distant light coming through the window. However, whenever I rendered the scene this way the distant light wouldn’t even show up, so I had to change it to a point light (which ended up working out pretty nice anyway J). 2. Point Light – Touching the wick on the candle (used for flame effect, but doesn’t actually emit shadows or light) 3. Point Light – Approximately 3 inches above wick on candle (used to give off the perceived lighting effects of the flame on the candle) 4. Distant Light – Positioned behind the camera providing backlight for the scene as well as providing the bar shadows along the back of the cell. Glass – I would have never been able to create any kind of glass effect without the help of a tutorial. By using an online tutorial, I was able to create a decent looking drinking glass pretty quickly. Time – I ran out of time on this project. If I had more time I would have liked to model a sink to put on the back wall of the cell as well as fill the glass with water.

| | Time Frame
Altogether, I probably spent about 25 hours working on this scene. The components that I spent the most time on would probably be the candle, bed, chains, and lighting. The candle is the first thing I tried to model, and because I wanted to make it look smooth, it took me a while. I would say I spent around four to five hours working on just the candle and stand. The bed itself was actually not that hard to model. However, the chains to hold up the bed took some experimenting. I probably spent around three hours modeling and positioning the bed and chains. I biggest time consumer for me was lighting. I will admit that the models in my scene were not terribly complex, however the lighting for this scene is what I believe makes the scene noticeable. I easily spent seven to eight hours messing around with different lighting positions, colors, and intensities.
