 Temple of Duality
Inspiration

We agreed to arrive in lab with thumbnail sketches of 5 of our own ideas. From those, we chose Drew’s idea, a temple in the woods. As we talked about the idea the temple went from Mayan to Roman to Chinese, the background from a forest to a beach to rolling hills reminiscent of China. The pool expanded to a lake and we added a bridge, tree and lanterns for effect.

Problems and Solutions

Drew:
Problem: Making a realistic roof.
Solution: I had to spend a lot of time making sure the points were all together and I did a lot of work adding in individual polys. There was no real solution, all I did was simply employ the tools that I have learned and worked until I had something I liked.

Problem: Getting a realistic daytime scene.
Solution: Again there was no real solution for this other than trial and error. I also used the available resources such as tutorials, the book, etc. and it helped.

Problem: Putting together a group project.
Solution: It is hard to put a group project together. No one really knows what the others are envisioning. This is something that will have to change over time. Communication and a sketch are very helpful in guiding everyone in the right direction.

Sean:
Problem: Volumetric lighting and Saslite do not work together unless you have the full version of Saslite.  What it does is it eats a whole in the Saslite where the volumetric light radius occurs.
Solution: I found the lens flares, but it wouldn’t simulate properly the effect I was looking for.  I then found the Glow intensity settings on both the surface editor and the scene settings.  Both have to be on for the glow to work.

Problem: The pathway, were it met the bride rocks was a sharp line not a fade as dirt really would.
Solution: Created a clip map for the edge of the dirt.

Problem: The sky dome wouldn’t allow for multiple shots of the sky without appearing 2-D.
S: I loaded the backdrop options and used a procedural texture to simulate the sky and clouds.

Problem: When I would first load my larger objects, I couldn’t get close to the smaller ones in layout without them disappearing.  This made it nearly impossible to get a good shot.
Solution: I found that the bracket key ([) set the grid size for the camera.  This allowed for close-ups of the smaller objects in my scene.

Katherine:
Problem: My lightwave files were coming up with errors ands not opening.
Solution: Once I found out that logging out doesn’t eject USB drives things were great. (I lost my first lantern roof because I took it out after logging thinking it was ok)
Problem: Making water.
Solution: The water tutorial mentioned below was a great resource and helped me understand many more aspects of the program.

Ben:
Problem: Making a Tree
Solution: The first thing I tried was the magic bevel tool. I would Drill/Stencil a 2-D circle out of the Trunk. Then I would magic bevel the circle polygon outward creating limbs.
The problem was that it was very time consuming to make lots of branches. It also had a very unrealistic look to it, and produced way too many polygons. The branches were extremely symmetrical. I also had to make many blossoms to cover the tree. I couldn’t figure out how to make realistic petals when I was UV mapping the blossoms.

In my frustration over creating a realistic leaf effect, I stumbled upon a brilliant tree tutorial.  It showed how to make a tree with lots of branches and very few polygons.
The Leaves were created by the particle clone tool, and a clip map. The second tree was too symmetrical as well so I went through the tutorial a second time and created a more randomized tree. The tree was now ready to be entered into the scene.

The problem was the leaves didn’t look good close up. The leaves got thrown out, but the branches stayed. Sean also had to tweak the branches a bit to give them a more organic feel.
