 Lonely Cabin
Inspiration

An old abandoned cabin in the middle of the woods stand lonely. Someone’s begun to chop more wood but has decided that it’s not worth it, so he leaves the cabin with the axe still stuck in the stump. Seasons have come and gone, now it’s back to fall again with pine needles and pine cones lying on the forest floor. The old brick well hasn’t aged at all it seems but has been empty for quite some time. All around the forest, no animals trample around the area where the lonely cabin stands.

Problems and Solutions

Mai: The one problem I had was with the tree model. We specifically wanted pine trees in our scene and while I was able to create this, it took a lot of polygons. I had two options, either make a few large polygons and paste an image on the surface or to actually make the pine needles, depending on how we were going to render our scene. I tried both and in the end, I decided on the model with a lot of polygons. In the end, with the qemLoss2 tool, I was able to reduce the number of polygons.

Javier: One of the problems that I had was creating a rope for the well. I tried creating it by using the capsule tool then I used the twist tool but the results did not look good. The rope lacked segments so it came out blocky. I did not find any solutions.

Chris: I had trouble creating the forest background for the scene.  The backdrop option in Layout didn’t provide a sufficient appearance and the number of appropriate pictures I had was small.  Another way to create a background was to surround the scene in a “sky dome”, which in my case was a cylindrical wall.  I made a giant disk that engulfed the scene, deleted the top polygon and the lower half below the scene.  The surface was inverted to show the texture on the inside.  In order for light to shine through this wall I had to go to item properties in Layout, and make the layer with the wall unaffected by light.  However, this meant the background dark.  To counter this, I raised the luminosity of the surface to match the lighting of the scene.
