Inspiration

There has been a murder in the kitchen of an unsuspecting beach house. It appears that the murder weapon was one of the knives from the knife holder; as one has been found on the floor covered in blood. The body is missing, indicating that the murderer made an attempt to eliminate the evidence, but forgot to clean the blood from the floor. His bloody shoe prints remain as the only evidence to his identity.

Problems and Solutions

Problem: The bloody shoeprint image had a white background that was showing on the tile floor.
Solution: I made the texture image really big with the shoe prints taking up a small part of the image, so that when it was applied, the area surrounding the shoe prints would look consistent.

Problem: The blood puddle was difficult to make rendering look correct.
Solution: Fiddling with the settings from the basic water puddle design darkened the blood and made it look more realistic.

Problem:  Finding images/bump maps that would create realistic textures on surfaces
Solution:  To find images of the actual surface or related one and add to the bump map image.  After finding images that would seem to fit the surface, to render the scene, check the surface, and repeat until desired effect is reached

Time Frame

The time spent on deciding what we were going to do and planning the layout and objects was about 2 hours. We had some trouble agreeing on what to model but we finally decided on a murder scene.

The time spent on modeling kitchen room, counter and cabinets was about 2 hours. Two members of our group did this at the same time because of initial communication problems.

The components in the kitchen including the bloody knife took about 10 man hours.

Larry spent about 5 hours learning how to make blood and perfecting it.

Texturing and surface editing took about 6 total man hours. We had some trouble getting the surfaces to shine correctly.

Lighting took about 4 total hours. It was difficult to get the ceiling lights to look realistic.

Getting everything to work together, troubleshooting, and rendering the scene took about 8 hours.

Total Hours Spent: 37
