Timothy Thao Desk Scene

 Me, Myself, in Darkness
Inspiration

The desk scene, everyday scenery for me, symbolizes the things I enjoy doing in my life; not just that, but what I experience everyday.  Not much light in this scenery, but enough of it to see what is lying on what, and what kind of things is being settled down in the scene.

This darkness symbolizes the atmosphere or environment I work in; dark places, but still able to see where things go.  The posters and drawings lying around the room symbolizes things I like to do, such as the poster of “Metriod,” an okay game, not the best I played, but okay.  As for the “Linkin Park” poster, I like the band and their music, keeping it sample, I like music.  I’m also a “Lord of the Ring” fan, a killer movie; it’s next to the “Sims” poster.  For the bass amp, I play the bass guitar for the band I’m in.

Posters and drawings I’ve not yet talk about, just symbolizes the same thing as the poster “Metriod,” meaning I love to play games and sketch things that pop into my mind.  Other than posters and pictures of my work, I tend to be somewhat a messy person and a person who prefers dark places than sunny places.

Problems and Solutions

P:  lying objects next to or onto other objects was a pain.
S:  I just move the objects to a different plain where the light wouldn’t be able to affect it by shadows; it only goes for some objects only.

P:  the glass cup was okay to make, but once it was but into the “Layout mode,” it was kind of hard to see the cup itself.
S:  I put the glass cup closer to the light so I could see the light bounce off the glass; making the glass cup more visible.

P:  the use of the light tools were difficult to use, because I didn’t really know if the light intensity was too much or not.
S:  the way I did it was to render the scene to see if the light looks good or not; and so I kept repeating rendering the scene; the sad put is that I’m still not satisfied with the lights.

Time Frame

All the making of the objects were easy, it took like 15 to 30 minutes.  But when it came down to moving the finish objects next to or onto other finish objects in the “Layout scene mode,” things got ugly.  It took me 30 minutes to 1 hour just to move one object to make it look nice without shadow being a problem.

Another thing was the glass cup.  I had to remodel the cup to see if I was modeling the cup correctly.  It took about 1 hour.  The sad part of this story was, I was doing it correctly all along.

The last part was the lighting situation.  I didn’t really know how much light (light intensity) is to be used for one of the lights.  So, I played around with the light intensity until I felt like it looks okay; took me about 2 hours just for lights.
