Inspiration

The inspiration of this piece is simply from what I believe is the perfect workstation.  In this room I would sit in my eerie yet ergonomic chair capable of suiting any desired position.  This room is designed to remove many distractions, mind the computer, and makes one focus at the task at hand.  A nice tool in this workstation is the magnifying glass lamp, when you really want to capture the detail in your objects.  As you can tell, I’m working on my pencil model in here.

Problems and Solutions

Positioning/Sizing objects:
My first problem was how to mind the right proportions for my desk and other objects in relation to the room.  I solved this with the use of boxes of approximate dimension of the objects and arranged as how the objects should be arranged.  This made me able to make properly proportioned and positioned objects in modeler, which translated to more efficient time in layout with minimal resizing and positioning.

Creating the magnifying glass:
The magnifying glass is simply a Boolean intersection of the top parts of two oblong spheres.  I made one sphere in one layer, copied it and pasted it in a second layer, and then made the two merge at their top and bottom ends.  This shape is then given an inside and outside layer for the glass texturing.

Seat cushions:
To make the seat cushions, I created capsules and used the magnet tool to morph them into the bottom and back cushions.

Avoiding errors:
I had a difficult time in layout due to errors that kept occurring in the software.  Every time I placed my pencil into the layout, Lightwave would suffer a data referencing error and crash.  To get the pencil into my desk scene I had to “sneak” the pencil in with another object.  So, I pasted the pencil on to my desk object making them one object.  Not only does this avoid the error, it’s also an easier way to position the pencil onto the desk.
