Nathan Benmargi Desk Scene

 The Essentials
Inspiration

I wanted to create a scene of what my desk would ideally look like if money was not an issue. Of course my room would have to have a huge stereo system and a gigantic, wall-mounted, high definition widescreen display. These are pretty much the two essential things I would want in my room. On the desk are a simple wireless keyboard and mouse, a desk lamp, a pencil, and an ash tray. I hate clutter in my room so I decided to keep my scene very simple and organized. Hopefully in 10 years, this is what my desk will look like.

Problems and Solutions

P1. I wanted to use an apple keyboard on my desk, which are typically all white. The only model I could find was an old school looking keyboard with a bunch of tacky looking grey keys.

S1. Using the Surface Editor, I was able to change the color of the grey keys, to match the others. This was definitely a compromise because the keyboard still didn't look much like the apple one I had imagined. But given the time constraints, I think it was a decent solution.

P2. I also wanted to use an apple mouse, but I ended up not being able to find any models of mouses.

S2. I ended up creating the mouse from scratch, using the capsule tool in Modeler.  I had to make sure the capsule was the size I wanted, because I had to cut it in half, and have the half resemble a mouse. It actually worked out for the best, because the Apple mouse I had imagined on my desk was actually shaped almost exactly like my half-capsule model. Adding a simple white color to the surface added the final touch.

P3. The area light in my desk lamp was placed directly inside the light bulb, which meant that It had alot of trouble penetrating the models, and created a very unrealistic looking scene.

S3. I went into Modeler and isolated the light bulb model onto it's own layer. In Layout, I went to Light properties, and specifically excluded the bulb layer. After I did this the light refracted quite realistically off of the inside of the lamp, casting a nice shadow down on the desk.

P4. The image quality on the parrot ended up looking a bit pixelated, I suppose because of the area light I used.

S4. I was not able to find a solution to this problem given the time constraints.
