 Death Plant
Inspiration

Secret agent Sir Marshall Goodteeth has tracked the dastardly villain Robert Smogg to his secret factory hidden on a barren plateau in Mongolia. Smogg has acquired a factory that has been converted to produce the most deadly of all chemical weapons on a mass scale, and Sir Goodteeth must destroy the facility before production of the weapons begins and Smogg unleashes his deadly toxins.

The factory was a decommissioned Mongolian soap factory, so there is no activity, and no working employees. Sir Goodteeth assumes that he is completely alone, so he doesn’t feel the need to be quiet or sneaky. Unbeknownst to him, Robert Smogg is in the control room. Hearing a noise, Smogg grabs his gun and comes out to investigate.

The two men are roaming the factory, neither one getting a glimpse of each other. Smogg senses an intruder, so he is ready to kill whoever he sees. His eyes are looking up and down the stairs and ladders looking for the trespasser. Sir Goodteeth is trying to find a good spot to plant the explosives he brought in order to destroy the factory, so his eyes are looking along the catwalks that he is traversing, since he is focused on his goal. Goodteeth is unarmed, and making no attempt at stealth.

Smogg eventually finds Sir Goodteeth and attempts to shoot him, but misses and hesitates. This hesitation gives Goodteeth enough time to rush Smogg, and they fight. They fight along several catwalks, and when Goodteeth gets the advantage, Smogg attempts to escape, but makes the mistake of fleeing upwards on a smokestack ladder instead of downward toward solid ground. Goodteeth pursues, and grabs Smogg by the ankle as they climb. A short struggle ensues, and Smogg tries to kick Goodteeth in the head, but looses his grip just as he nears the top of the ladder. Sir Goodteeth almost falls, but grips a man-cage just below the ladder platform. Smogg is less fortunate, and plunges over 300 feet to his death.

Sir Marshall Goodteeth is rid of his enemy, so he climbs the last of the ladder, drops the explosives into the top of the smokestack, and successfully blows up the factory. As the factory explodes into balls of hot flame and metal projectiles, he jumps off the highest point of the factory, unfurling his parachute on the way down to safe ground.

Problems and Solutions

We ran into problems using the SkyTracer 2 plugin.  Many of the rendered images were over or underexposed when the jpeg was examined. This problem was fixed by saving the output render as a .HDR format image which seemed to correctly composite the image.

We also had problems with the HDR, but after several days of testing were able to find a proper configuration for the settings.

We had a lot of problems with the control room. The Boolean that was used to cut out the inside of the room wasn’t working out and caused the door and window to cut at odd angles. This eventually had to be remedied by starting over. Then we realized that we needed to have glass in the window, and after working on that for awhile it was apparent that the glass wasn’t rendering properly. It looked like a version of a pixilated TV screen. This was also fixed by starting over.
