 Remembering a loved one
Inspiration

A man lost the love of his life several years ago.  She enjoyed listening to him play his violin.  For many years after her death he would go to the very spot in which they met and play.  As a final symbol of his love he places his violin amongst the leaves and walks away.

Problems and Solutions

The scroll was probably the hardest thing to model.  I originally attempted to rail extrude the entire thing but continued to get bad results.  The ultimate solution was doing the rail extrude by sections.  I took my existing rails and cut them into pieces.  I also used the last polygon of the last rail extrude for the new rail extrude.

I was creating many non-planar polygons for things like my tailpiece.  When I tripled the shapes they were drastically distorted.  My solution was to use my existing outside points and create curves and then to patch which creates smoother non-planar surfaces.

I tried creating a bump map with a color conversion in Photoshop.  This gave the entire ground a very strange bumpy look.  To get the effect I wanted I simply air brushed in the entire grout.
