Inspiration

Chico has just built a new skatepark, designed and payed for by your’s truly.  Transworld Skateboarding Magazine has come to do a section called Park Spotting.  This is where they go to different skateparks and tell you about them.  These articles are usually based more on the park rather than the skating, but a few big names from the skate industry showed up to get some coverage.  So, this is the magazine layout before it would go into print.

I wanted to do a scene more about modeling than anything else because this is what I enjoy doing.  I also wanted to do something that I know I wouldn’t get sick of half way through, so I chose what I love to do the most, skateboard.  I really enjoyed this project because I got to make my perfect park, though it didn’t really turn out that way due to time, of course.  I was able to create what I would enjoy skating and put them all into one park.

*The last render from the top has nothing to do with the magazine, it is just for reference and to show the expansiveness of the scene.

Problems and Solutions

I made the coping for the bowls separate from the actual bowls.  To make the bowls I used smoothing but to make the coping I had a lot more polys, so when I put them together, it made a lot of strange shadows.  I fixed it in mirage after rendering.

When I put all the bowl pieces together, the smoothing made some odd looking corners and lighting.  I changed some points around and fixed the rest in mirage after rendering.

Planning the project took a long time.  I had to plan out the exact dimensions of most things beforehand which was difficult.  This saved me a lot of time however when I finally got to layout and was able to place everything really easily using the grid snap feature.

Finding pictures that matched my scene, like being in daylight and the camera angle etc. was really difficult.  I finally had to pick some pictures that didn’t fit perfectly.  Changing the pictures once I put them in lightwave also took a long time to match the lighting and camera angle and what not.

I found out that you can’t use digital confusion with transparent objects.  That’s too bad.
