Inspiration

I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do until I found the most awesome picture of a castle on one of those computer graphics web sites. It was so majestic looking with tons of pillars, towers, bridges, and so much stuff piled on top of everything else, it was insane! I wanted to make something like that. But…it was a very advanced level of modeling and texturing, that I thought…I can’t do that yet, but I want to make a castle. I went looking for that picture again and I couldn’t find it. I was sad. I cried a bit. But it was okay, because I found another picture, not quite as good as the other one. That’s where I picked out the actual shape of my castle, and I added what else I wanted on my own. I wanted to make a sunset scene too, just because I like sunsets. So…I combined the two ideas. :D

Problems and Solutions

1. The biggest problem was what to do with the background. I wanted to make a sunset scene, and I knew I was going to do the background by compositing, so I had to match up the sky picture as best I could with the lighting on the castle. It was hard to find a nice picture and one that fit well. I finally found one that would work, but the grainy-ness of the picture didn’t look quite right with the perfect castle. To fix this, I had to make the castle a little bit grainy, which caused it to slightly change colors and make the picture not as clear. It was just a little difficult matching it all up.

 2. Near the beginning of the project, I was trying to figure out how to make a medieval looking bridge and the tops of the towers with multiple boxes surrounding everything. I was planning on just either placing every single box, or just Boolean subtracting all the boxes, which now I see wouldn’t have worked. I figured out how to use the array tool and that made everything much easier and faster.

3. It was hard getting the lighting on the castle too look like a golden sunset. I had to play around with multiple lights for a few hours before it even started looking good. Not to mention having to set up all the lights in the direction you want the sun pointing at the object.
