 The Cave
Inspiration

Fame and fortune are no incentive for this. Greed grasps no man’s heart strong enough to lure him here. There is nothing that can bring a man to this place save perhaps insanity or the will of god. It may even take a little of both. This cave is where it rests, if it indeed rests at all. This cave shadowed by two long dead trees and shined upon by the light of the full moon. You see only darkness in the mouth of the cave and in moments that may be all you’ll ever see. Men have taken their last breaths at this place as evidenced by the swords placed by the entrance. As you come closer, so too does the beast you’ve sought, and its red eyes glow from the darkness of the cave. Does fear grip you now? If it does then it is already too late. This is a place of either death or destiny and fear will grant you only death. The beast approaches and you take what may be your last few breaths...

Problems and Solutions

I couldn’t get the mountain side to look right by just subdividing, subpatching and using point manipulation. It ended up looking terrible and left a lot of tears in it. I had to make a new mountain. This time I tried using Gaussian Jitter, which was risky, but it turned out good, I think.

I had previously tried making the interior of the cave because I figured a little bit of the inside might be lit up, but no matter what I did the light still hit inside the cave so I decided to just leave it empty and have a pure black background.

I had a lot of trouble with the lights. I wanted the global illumination to be as low as possible without it being too dark. This was a challenge. I had a light on the side, but with shadows on it didn’t look good so I just decided on one overhead light. I think the lighting turned out good, though maybe a little too dark.
