Inspiration

When I found out that Rocky 6 was finally going to hit theaters I was thrilled.  I started guessing what scenes might be included in the film and I thought they may have one scene where Rocky goes back and revisits his old gym.  I started making some quick thumbnails for the project and narrowed it down to a shot of a punching bag in the foreground, a boxing ring and a silhouette of Rocky standing in the doorway.  This scene didn’t show up in the film but I liked the idea and wanted to set up the lighting in a way that matched the mood of the film and I think it worked pretty well.

Problems and Solutions

One minor problem I had was trying to figure out how I was going to get a decent looking silhouette of Rocky with out modeling the figure.  I was going to add it in Photoshop after the render but that wouldn’t give me accurate shadows casting from the figure nor would the light react with it.  I browsed the tutorials site and found one on clipping masks.  I followed it exactly and it worked out far better than it would have if I had added a photo afterwards.  The only issue I had was that the light wasn’t reacting with his shoulders the way I had hoped.  To fix this I then took the render to Photoshop and painted the highlights in.

My biggest problem was lighting.  I started with the single lamp over the ring but then the bag was in total darkness.  I added a key light and experimented with it for hours trying to get the right angle and intensity on it so that it wouldn’t be obvious that I used the key light and it work out.  Then there was the issue of creating the silhouette.  I wanted to light the door and cast a shadow of Rocky that reached toward the bag.  However this required using two lights outside the room which was casting two shadows.  I had to make a compromise so I used one light and just positioned it where it would light the door and cast a nice shadow.  The shadow isn’t quite where I wanted it but it in the first place but it worked out nicely.
