 Big Robots Don't Cry
Story

Optimus Prime is forced to adapt to meet the needs of today’s flashy, sleek, on-the-go robot, though he has become emotionally attached to his classic box-like form from the 80’s. Suffering from an identity crisis and poor body image due to adds glorifying slim, anorexic robots, our hero takes a long, painful look inside before undergoing a new transformation. Just who is he changing for? Society? His fellow Autobots? Or for himself? Will he be able to recognize himself when he runs an internal diagnostic? Or will the world pass him by if he refuses to adapt?

Inspiration

My inspiration came from my mixed feelings about the new Transformers movie coming out. While I’m glad it will be live action mixed with CG and have serious Terminator-esque overtones, I’m a little upset about how much they have changed the look of characters I grew up with. Times and tastes change, but some of us hold on to the past out of nostalgia and fear of a strange new future to come.

Problems and Solutions

Some textures looked really goofy. When resizing didn’t work I just chose a new texture.
It was hard to get the whole bulletin board in the shot. I shrunk it down and sank the building by 5 virtual feet.

The eyes didn’t look sad enough so I gave him eyebrows.

Time Frame

The entire scene was worked on concurrently to ensure everything looked well together, as my PowerPoint shows. Overall, I spent 30plus hours on it, and 25 of those hours we’re on modeling and texturing Optimus. The rest was on background. I stuck to my original sketch, so there was little extra scene planning involved. There were 3 spotlights which were planned from the get-go, so they only took 5 minutes to set up.
