Inspiration

In the summer of 1990 I got one of the greatest shocks of my life. A friend of mine couldn't go to a concert so he gave me four tickets to see some southern rock guy. I wasn't particularly interested, but after all, free is free. So I grabbed a few of my buddies and we travelled the forty five minutes to Darien Lake Ampitheatre to check this dude out. It was the greatest guitar performance I had ever seen (and probably ever will, for that matter), and I was extremely saddened to learn that this "rock guy" died in a plane crash a few months later. If you've never heard of Stevie Ray Vaughn, you are definitely missing out and should put yor online pirating to good use and download some of his music.

This project has been a bit awkward for me because it has evolved into an idea that I worry doesn't do the man justice. I've used the premise of "ROBOCOP" to dig up and bring Stevie back to life for another go at it. I chose an acoustic guitar and the intimate setting to compliment the whole robot thing. He's "plugged in", not the instrument.

Problems and Solutions

I ran into a few problems with this project. The first was just trying to figure out what the heck I was going to model. I started to do a caricature of a drawing I did years ago and decided it was just a dumb idea. Then I tried a little organic modeling of a head with the idea in mind that I would make my robot a cannibal that wore human faces for fun. This just turned out to be a dumb idea so I scrapped it. I started to realize that I was runnig out of time so I combined the two ideas and chopped up the head and added it to the robot face and happened to be listening to Stevie Ray Vaughn one day...and there you go. I also forgot to model a guitar strap but sort of saved myself by propping the instrument on his knee; so you people that are critiquing me - Here is some free criticism.

Problem #2: Lighting. I wanted to combine a dive bar with a dead cyborg and couldn't figure out how to go about lighting it properly.
Solution: John Pozzi helped me use one stark spot light combined with some strategically placed point lights (13, to be exact) scattered about the robot's body to create the effect I was looking for.

Problem #3: Posing the character.
Solution: I was originally going to rig the model, but the process became too confusing very quickly so I scrapped the idea. I need to practice that over the summer. I did it the old fashioned way: "t" and "y".
