Thomas Uster Desk Scene

 My laboratory of deception
Inspiration

I wanted to give a fairly accurate representation of my desk at home I use for practicing magic.  I simply sit at my desk and manipulate objects.  The scene is a metaphor for the secret of magic, simplicity.

Problems and Solutions

The left light source at the top of the lamp was looking a little strange when I first rendered.  I remodeled the upper half of the lamp and made sure the light source was in the correct position.  Moving the lamp closer against the wall also diminished this problem.

I had a problem with floating and angle issues of my objects on the table.  After figuring out I could move and magnify in the different viewpoints in layout it was much easier to fix these kinds of problems.  It was also nice being aware that I could input into the bottom left corner that shows the actual angle measurement.

The right wall was awkward.  It lacked visual queues to let the viewer know it was perpendicular to the left wall.  I solved this problem by changing the texture of the right wall and creating the calendar.

The actual light sources themselves didn’t look lit up.  The inner bowls of the objects would be dark.  I added spotlights and anchored them directly to the lamps to create the light bulb effect.

The desk had little detail.  I added support beams on all of the legs.  I also took a picture of my desk to give the table a more detailed texture.

It should be noted that this was very hard for me to estimate my time spent. It seemed like I spent much more time then I have totaled here.
