Inspiration

Story: My desk scene is inspired by my desk at home. Since I am a computer science major, I am constantly at my desk and know it very well. I wanted to try to recreate my desk because I have everything to meet the requirements. When my desk is clean, this render gives a pretty good idea of what it looks like. I don't have much of a story behind it but when I have a few minutes to kill I like to read a popular news site called Digg. I used an actual screenshot of my desktop with the Digg page open in FireFox so that it gave the realism of my home scene.

I spent about 25 hours on my project. A lot of undocumented time from above was spent setting up lighting. I have found that it is very difficult to get good lighting in a scene. What makes it even more difficult, is the use different kinds of lighting. I used a volumetric light for my monitors to give them a glow effect. This drastically slowed down render time. I had to be patient and just tweak the settings until I found something that seemed to work.
Problems and Solutions

I ran into a problem when trying to use the clip map to make my keyboard look the way it does. The tutorial I was using said to put black where I did NOT want the image to show up. I gave it a shot and it did not render correctly. I eventually inverted the black and white in the kbclip.jpg and it worked perfectly. I was stuck reapplying the clip map and texture several times until I finally decided to flip the image and it worked.

References

I used a clip map tutorial from our class webpage to get my keyboard to look the way it does. It took a long time to select the image in Photoshop using the marquee. I had to zoom in and follow the edge all the way around until I only had the keyboard selected. Then once the marquee was in the shape of the keyboard, I put it into a new document and colored the outside black. This created a problem that I will describe below.
