Inspiration

Yarr. I wanted to make a desk scene with something that I like and hasn’t been used quite a lot, so I chose to do a pirate desk! More of a table that would be in a cabin of the ship where the captain would do his daily map-checking and gold counting.

Problems and Solutions

1) Learning Lightwave!! This program makes me a nervous wreck for some reason. I bet I have a lot of people annoyed by me asking so many questions, but by doing so, I am slowly but surely learning this program. Also with the help of some tutorials.

2) Creating a candle flame. I think that this was the most difficult part of the whole piece. After struggling with it for quite some time, I finally found a tutorial to create a clipmap, in which I created a fake 2D flame to put on top of the candle itself. I then set a point light on the top of the clipmap and changed around the settings for that to make it look like actual candle light. After that, I struggled with using a lens flare because I didn’t know what the heck it was doing, but I finally figured it out and ended up creating more of the flame and glow with it.

3) Making the bottle of rum glass. I found that there was a bunch of things that needed to be checked in order to make it actually look like glass. It turned up the render time by A LOT, and I couldn’t get it quite the shade that I wanted it to, but I still think it looks fine.

4) Losing textures. Whenever I would close out of Lightwave and load my scene back up, the textures of the room and the table would change and I would have to reset them every time. I really don’t know what I could do to prevent this except reload every time I bring Lightwave back up.
