 Dorm Room of Solitude
Inspiration

My inspiration was one of my friend’s dorm rooms that he treated like a sanctuary.  He used to say it was his personal space where he could go to escape ordinary life and get lost in another world of fantasy by means of a good movie.  However, his room was a big mess and not very relaxing so I decided to create a room that would give me the same feeling that his room gave him.  To do this I chose to use lots of cool colors and low lights to give a calm and peaceful feel.  I also chose to go with a Superman theme since this was one of the last films I saw that allowed me to experience an impossible fantasy. .

Problems and Solutions

The biggest problem I seemed to have was lighting.  I wanted the light to behave as realistic as possible but using a single point light in my lamp wasn’t quite working.  I tried playing with the surfaces of the walls to get them to reflect light all around the room but I was having trouble doing so with out making the walls appear  to shiny.  I was advised to use another light source at the camera’s side as a fill light to help get the effect I wanted and it seemed to work.  The shadows and the luminosity of the room appeared more realistic using this method.

Many of my texturing problems remained unresolved.  I wasn’t satisfied with the glass object because it didn’t look real.  I’m going to explore this project further and experiment with the levels of transparency and reflectivity of the surfaces to try and get a more convincing glass object.
