Andrea Hagey Desk Scene

 East Village "Efficiency"
Inspiration

My inspiration for this scene was the Stephen King novel, “The Dark Half”, in which the story’s evil protagonist rents a dirty little room in New York and attempts to write a book with nothing more than pencils and a notepad. I thought that a raving murderous lunatic might not necessarily be concerned with his furnishings if his focus was simply on writing and killing, so I made sure that the colors were dank and lifeless to reflect the feeling the book gave me about this man and his room.

The hovels for let in the East Village in New York are called “efficiencies” because of the comparatively moderate rent. I wanted to make this scene look like it was dingy and horrible, but that it could also be someone’s home.

Problems and Solutions

My biggest problem was in figuring out how to make the colors of each texture fit together in such a way that there was continuity in the style of the scene. Lightwave was very limited on the number of wood textures available, and the colors clashed together horrendously, so my solution was to search online and find my own wood textures. The ones I found did a better job expressing the sensibility of the scene.
Another problem I had was working outside lab time on other computers with different versions of Lightwave. I felt as though I lost a lot of time trying to navigate various versions of the program. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a solution to that problem.
