 The Apple Farm
Inspiration

My desk scene inspiration came from a movie that I recently viewed. The film, The Cider House Rules, was an academy award winning movie starring Tobey Maguire and Charlize Theron. The protagonist, Homer (Maguire) leaves the orphanage where he was once raised and worked as a doctor to discover the world. Through his travels he comes to find himself living with a family and working on an apple farm. I wanted to create an area where Homer would probably go if he wanted to be alone. Furthermore, I always liked the feel of old, rustic apple farms. It kind of reminds me of a life of peace and hard work. With the inspiration it led me to create a storage room, with a few apple crates, and a big crate used as a desk.

Problems and Solutions

Overall, most of the problems that I cam upon was solved by using the class tutorials from previous years. However, a pretty common problem that I came across was when trying to find the right wood color for the big crate in the scene. When I finally found the right texture it was to light and didn’t fit within the scene very well. So, to fix this problem I open the image file with Photoshop. Once in Photoshop, I used the levels option to darken or light the image.

References

References that were used were a lot of the class tutorials. For instance, the three main tutorials that were used were Todd Clark, Josiah Koons, and Jinsheng Li which were very helpful to create the galls effect. I used their tutorials while trying to create a glass ashtray in my scene. Also, Jeff Bohlin tutorial on “Simple Texture Mapping” was very useful to create the rough, scratchy texture scene on the floor and the walls in my scene.
