 A Very Strong Grip
Inspiration

My inspiration for this work was the very first Lightwave object I had ever created: the pencil.  In addition, I had been shown a neat little function that Lightwave has call “Plot 2D”  This allowed me to “break” the pencil in almost a random fashion.  My drawing hobby also gave inspiration.  I have always found it irritating to break a pencil tip while drawing and to have no sharpener around.  I thought it would be funny to mess around with the various tools of the program and resize a pencil to be the height of a human.  This pencil would also be broken, hence “A Very Strong Grip.”

Problems and Solutions

The first problem I came across was lighting the room up.  Everything seemed to be too dark all the time.

There were two ways I solved the problem.  First I increased the intensity fall-off of the light to 4 meters.  This allowed the light to travel further and still look natural.  Second, and this was the kicker,  I modified the color of the shadows under the “Shadows” tab to something lighter than black.  This color was as dark as my shadow became.  I

Another problem I came across was how sharp the shadows were.

Under the Global Illumination there is a check box called “Shading Noise Reduction.”  This softens the edges a bit and makes it more realistic.
