| | Inspiration
I didn’t have any particular inspiration for this desk. I just closed my eyes and imagined a simple desk with a few simple items on it, and I created it. I later revisited this project and decided my original scene was a little “lacking” so I modified it. I decided to make it a night scene with a window overlooking a large city. I decided the scene should be primarily lit by moonlight and the light from my lamp (no other room lights). I also revised my glass texture to make it more believable.

| | Problems and Solutions
The main problem I had was teaching myself 3D Studio Max 5 to do the project. 3ds Max 5 is a complicated piece of software with a plethora of features that can sometimes be daunting. I also had problems getting the lighting right. I had to re-render the scene many times to get it exactly how I wanted. The bend tool in 3ds also confused me a little at first, but I finally figured out that you place the “gizmo” at the point about which you want the bend to occur. I originally wanted to use a spotlight inside my lamp, but I abandoned that Idea because I couldn’t get it to work right. I finally switched the light to a “photometric” light. This type of light is basically an omni directional light that allows you to specify the brightness in terms of “lumens.” Overall this project was defiantly a good learning experience.
