 2001: A Space Officey
Inspiration

I started out this project doing something completely different, but decided on a space theme after I played around putting a map on the wall.  I thought it would look cool to have a globe outside the window, so I made one and I really liked the way it turned out.  What I ended up with really reminded me of a futuristic space office or something, really quiet and cold looking.  I’m happy with the way it turned out, since I had never used any 3d rendering software before and I never thought I’d learn how to use it.

Problems and Solutions

I had some major issues with the lighting.  I spent most of my render time trying to figure out what I was doing wrong.  It turns out that I had the scale all wrong for the lights, as well as some of the options set incorrectly.  Once I got help with the lighting, I really enjoyed playing around with light settings in the scene.  I love the red glow that is spread from a source outside the camera view.

Aside from the lighting, I also had some issues with bump mapping.  I had originally made the desk out of wood and had a bump map on it, but I learned that bump maps don’t look very good when viewed from a sharp angle.  I ended up scrapping the idea for the wooden desk, mainly because it looked really out of place with the space view out the window.  I liked the shiny, porcelain look that the desk ended up with.  I had originally intended to have a globe sitting on the desk as well, but I ran out of time and it didn’t look good at all.  I also wanted to have stars in the background, but again, I ran out of time before I could add them.
