 Sionaas's Desk
Inspiration

In a stone tower high up amongst the cliffs, the evil wizard Sionaas sits at his desk, plotting his revenge against the heroes who dared defy him. Poring over ancient tomes and reciting arcane rituals in his head, he dreams of the day that he can free his dark mistress from her millenia-long imprisonment. For the spider queen Lolth always rewards those who are faithful to her, and Sionaas has ever been her loyal servant...
In creating this scene, I drew inspiration from the Dungeons and Dragons campaign that I'm currently running.  Sionaas, a dragon taking the form of a human wizard, is attempting to free the spider queen, Lolth, from where she has been imprisoned for three millenia.  The heroes, naturally, have to stop him.

Problems and Solutions

The only major hurdle I had was creating the flame effects for the fireballs.  I created a sphere, then made a larger sphere around it, extended the top half up and then pretty much went nuts with the move and rotate tools using both point and polygon selection.  I looked through a variety of different textures and played around with glow, transparency, and translucency effects until I got what I wanted.
