Inspiration

I basically got my inspiration from a couple of different sources.  The main point I wanted to get across to the viewer was basically what it would be like if you lived in a dorm in Amsterdam? How would it be different? What would the scenery be? What are the differences going to college across the Atlantic compared to college at Chico State? My conclusion is that there would not be too much difference. So in my scene I included the brick walls that everybody who has ever gone to college knows and loves. I also included the required college dorm posters that everybody seems to have (I know I did.) I got inspiration for the desk from my desk back home. I also thought that dark wood gives off an old european vibe which is convenient because I always loved the feel of the dark wood and I really wanted to recreate that. As for the differences, being that it is in Amsterdam, I included a nice background of downtown London, and also a stemmed drinking glass for certain beverages that would be legal to drink in Amsterdam as well.

Problems and Solutions

Since this is my first EVER computer modeling scene and first time using Lightwave, there was something new every time I worked on my scene. As far as modeling goes, my toughest object to create had to be the lamp, getting the lathe to work right proved to be tricky to a novice like me. One problem was getting the right lampshade. I first used a cylinder and modified it, however you can’t really get the depth of it, so Clarke suggested I use a cone and Boolean subtract tool, this proved to be very successful. When I started work on texturing, it took me almost just as long to figure out textures as it was to model and set up all my objects in my scene. I used tutorials from the class website to make glass and also figure out my stem glass with the lathe tool. Tracking down the right texture online also took up a considerable amount of time.  However with some searching I found websites that totally fit my needs. As stated before, this was my first time doing anything with 3D modeling, but this is what I am passionate about, so this project was a learning process all around for me.
