Understanding Games

Select a game.  It can be any game.  Write down a detailed description of the game describing it to someone who has never played the game.
Select a totally different game.  Again write down a detailed description of the game describing it to someone who has never played the game.
Compare your descriptions.  Think carefully about the underlying mechanics of the game.
Which elements were different?
Which elements are similar?

The goal of this exercise is to get you to begin thinking about the nature of games and to realize that games do share some common elements, no matter how dissimilar they may seem.  The common elements of these games are probably common to most, if not all games.  You need to recognize these elements to help understand games and how to design games.
