Mike Schulz Final Scene
 Sun Across The Sky
Inspiration

My inspiration came from one of my classes I took at Chico State.  As a history major I was introduced to Ancient Egyptian history.  I found it very fascinating.  One of the things we learned was the close association with life and death.  It seems their whole life was preparing for their death.  This is prevalent in their major constructions of the pyramids.  Yet there is another side they valued and that was life.  The dung beetle was associated with life.  It would lay its eggs in the dung ball, and it appeared as though life was emerging.  They also related the dung beetle pushing the dung ball with the sun.  They envisioned a dung beetle pushing the sun across the sky the same way.  I came to the conclusion that I wanted to express this in my final project.

Problems and Solutions

Lighting

There are several lights used in this scene.  The sun provides the major light source.  There is an area light to give you a brighter scene.  There are also spotlights on the beetle and ground to give a realistic looking lighting.

The major problems I had was with the lighting.  For some reason the light I was using as the sun didn’t match up with where it was in the shot.  The result was unrealistic lighting.  I had to add another light where the sun was suppost to be and tweak the settings.  In addition the light I had on my beetle and sand by the beetle didn’t work together.  The solution was to add a spotlight just on the beetle, and another spotlight just on the terrain with different settings.  This way you can see the beetle without the terrain lighting looking false.
Time Frame

I spent about half the time from labs in Modeler, and the other half plus outside time in Layout.  I would estimate about 60 % of this project was in Layout just trying to get the positions, textures, and mainly lighting that I wanted.
