Jayme Ghisletta Final Scene

Inspiration

My inspiration for this scene was New Orleans.

During break I went to New Orleans.  It was my first trip there and I loved every minute of it.  It is a city with a great nightlife as well as a rich culture.  It is an old city and has very much character.  We stayed in the French quarter in an historic building that was built in 1870.  On every street corner you can hear a band playing jazz or a man signing.  There is art for sale by local artist in Jackson square and you can also get your palms or tarot cards read there.

New Orleans has a very rich voodoo culture.  There is Voodoo shops, temples and museums everywhere.  At the market they sale authentic voodoo dolls.  The African slaves brought voodoo to New Orleans.  Later many of them were baptized into the Catholic Church.  This explains why voodoo now incorporates catholic icons into their worship.  One of the most famous practitioners of voodoo was Marie Laveau.  She was the one who brought Mary in as one of the main people of worship.  Marie Laveau is legendary and is called the Queen of Voodoo.  She has shops named after her and there is even a tour that takes you too her crypt in New Orleans unique cemeteries.

My scene shows that catholic influence by having a cross.  Voodoo flags are also in the scene.  The flags are thought to be sacred and are only brought out during ceremonies.  Today they are used as decoration because they are very aesthetically pleasing.  They are made from silk, stain, cloth or burlap.  They are decorated with beads, sequins, and embroidered with pearls.  All of the flags are brightly colored.

Problems and Solutions

My main problem with this project was inspiration.  Every thing I thought of didn’t sound appealing.  I was going to do a boutique.  I was going to have a store front with a window display.  Also I was going to decorate the inside.  I was going to have clothes on hangers, some folded on tables. I was even going to put in a cash register and fitting rooms.  The problem was I didn’t know how to make fabric.  I tried to get tutorials but it seemed that it was too difficult for my skill level.  My solution for this was some time off.  After thanksgiving I was given an idea and I was motivated.  I was creating an image I was interested and excited about so the time went by a lot easier.

Lighting has always been one of my problems.  I try to create realistic lighting in my other works but it doesn’t come out right.  This time I wanted to use volumetric lighting.  I read tutorials on the internet and they helped out.  I also read the book but the explainations in that were too confusing.  I ended up using a volumetric tutorial that one of my classmates made.  That was a great help.

Rendering was also difficult for me.  Not only did they take forever, some how they wouldn’t save.  I tried everything and eventually figured out that you have to have image display on.  One thing that I did to cut down on render time was take out some of the glass I had on my shelves.  All the glass made the render process drag on.

Tools

I feel comfortable with the tools I know so I stuck with them.  I also played with some other new tools.  The Boolean tool is the best tool ever invented.  I also use the sketch and lathe tool to create all the jars.  The new tool I used was volumetric lighting for the crystal ball.  It gives the overall piece a better look.
