Mark Filanov Final Scene
 Viking Ship
Inspiration

I have always been interested in Nordic culture so modeling a Viking  ship for me was an inspiration in itself. Besides, good ocean scenes never get old. I wanted to capture a mood of a lonely Viking ship sailing into the vast ocean of the unknown. The mood is not that of a foreseeable danger but of an enthusiastic beginning of a new adventure.  Perhaps it will lead to new lands, rapping with exquisite foods, or maybe a kingdom, rich with precious metals. Nobody knows exactly when the ship will be coming back to its fatherland and whether it will be coming back at all. But the nature of a Viking is to never second-guess an adventure that lies ahead.

Problems and Solutions

I was lucky enough to find a really good online tutorial which guided me step by step on how to use the spline modeling technique. But one has to be very careful when modeling with splines because a small mistake in the middle of the process might lead to an unusable model in the end. You always have to think ahead and know exactly what it is you are trying to achieve. I had managed to make a few mistakes somewhere during the middle of he tutorial and had to backtrack almost all the way to the beginning. Another issue was time management, Building with splines takes longer than I thought it would. So I had to rush through the tutorial as fast as I could and even had to skip a few details. Overall, this tutorial gave me a pretty good idea about spline modeling.
