Vanessa Diaz Final Scene
 Patrick and Sponge Bob's Breakthrough
Inspiration

This is a production which I can happily say I had a great time making.  I am also pretty glad to say that I have applied many of the new concepts and techniques I have learned through experience and help from my fellow classmates.  I feel that, over all, this product illustrates my growth in Lightwave and the understanding of scene production and animation.   Hope you enjoy.

Story

Well, I guess the whole thing starts, Patrick and Sponge Bob have broken out of the Television.  Now they are in 3-D world.  Sponge Bob is having trouble finding the courage to come out of what he is used to and hesitates.  Patrick, on the other hand, is so curious and oblivious about anything he rushes out of the television.  The little starfish is dumbfounded by this amazingly bright object sitting on the table.  He has never seen a candle before, so he wants to get closer.  Sponge Bob finally decides to come out but can’t reach the floor so he is left dangling from the television.

Inspiration

I had this story old storyboard where I have a little boy playing with a candle.  Well I knew that for me I would obsess over the face and the fact that I only had a month I decided to mix it up a little.  So after some brainstorming I figured that I should mix some of my favorite things in there.  I love cartoons so I chose one that’s recent and that I like to watch…but don’t tell anyone.   With this mix I could focus on the whole scene the characters my layout, everything.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I liked making it!!!!

Problems and Solutions

Well my objects were pretty easy to make and my characters were some what more challenging but all in all it was relatively simple.  Once I practiced using the tools and methods to create my objects I had a good time.  The most difficult part of my scene was the lighting.  First I had problems with the candle light and getting the effects I wanted.  The first thing I tried was setting three point lights at the wick.  I made them all volumetric and played with the fall off, radius, light intensity, and density.  This gave me a pretty good effect but not exactly what I wanted, but then with the advice of some fellow classmates I decided to try the flare lighting effects and it really gave me that glow I was looking for.  Then I noticed that I wasn’t getting shadows and by playing with the render options I found out that I didn’t have ray tracing on so that was an easy solution.

Then I had issues with the T.V. lighting, but the solution to that was easy. A broken T.V. doesn’t emit light, duh.  The candle light wasn’t lighting up the room enough so putting a distant light in the scene and turning off ray tracing so that it wouldn’t cast shadows helped that.  I think that is what I had most trouble with.

Conclusion

To conclude, this project has helped me practice and understand many of the tools and concepts of Lightwave and animation.  It has also helped me understand how truly important lighting, Textures, and camera angles are in conveying the mood and look of the scene.  Thus, making this a great learning experience for me!
