Juliana Correa Final Scene
 FF8: Squall Leonhart
Inspiration

This is yet another piece of mine that is related back to Final Fantasy VIII.  I was trying to do a scene from the opening of the video game where Seifer and Squall are fighting.  My original idea was to do those two main characters in actual combat, but I quickly realized that it would be too much work.  After that, I decided to just do an image of Squall from when he first got his scar.  Although I didn’t have the time or ability to add the blood dripping down Squall’s face, I was able to finish most of his head.

Problems and Solutions

The biggest problem I had was with the fur.  After going through many, many tutorials online to attempt to get the fur going, and honestly after about eight hours dedicated to making the fur, I finally came across a “beginners” tutorial where it was –finally- explained to me that I had to load the Saslite plug in into –two- separate places.  Of course, after that the fur immediately worked – to my horror… all that time wasted.  After that came the texturing.  Although I love texturing, it’s certainly my weak point when it comes to using UVMaps.  I had to use a couple for this project, the two notable ones are for Squall’s hair, and then again for Squall’s face so I could place his scar down.  Although I feel the face’s UVMap didn’t turn out well, the hair looked pretty awesome.  There was supposed to be a transparency added to the hair, but unfortunately when I turned it on it made the hair far too scarce and my character almost looked bald, so I ignored the tranparency setting, for the sake of time (because this part of my project, the hair, took probably about five hours in it’s own.)  The eyebrows were the last piece I added, and I eventually took them away.  I made them with a basic circle and shaped them accordingly.  The shape turned out fine, but it was the texture of the eyebrows that sucked.  I tried using Saslite for the eyebrows, but that looked fairly rediculus itself.  So in the end I just deleted them (because I didn’t really have time to try again) and I liked the end result much better.
