“Decision” began in the pursuit to create a rough scene that might have appeared in a more feudal part of the world in the early twentieth century. As the scene came along I began to adapt it to a famous anime series from Japan called Naruto. Naruto, created by Kishimoto, takes place in a modern area but still depends on feudal weaponry and fighting.
This scene I specifically designed for one of the main characters, Susuke. This character has a dark past where he was left with no family and only a path of revenge. In the story he is on the edge of a knife about which path he should follow. One is revenge, while the other is reestablishing friends and family and moving on in life. But as the story goes, he leans more toward the dark path. The desk scene tries to give light to what good treasures he could pursue, but shows the deep aggravation of his character which takes him down the path of vengeance.

| | Problems and Solutions
The objects were mostly simple. The more complicated throwing knifes were modeled after several different versions I had seen on the internet. As not to copy Naruto too much, the objects were mostly unique. A Chinese wall scroll was added to liven up the room, and a picture from Naruto was added as a central focus. A schematic was left on one of the ancient scrolls to leave a sign of my engineering background.
Basic feudal weapons littered an area of the desk. Ninja stars and throwing knifes. A sword was mounted on the wall to add to the weaponry. The sword was the only object not created by me; it was imported from Lightwave’s library.
First problem I ran into was to set a certain mood for the scene. I needed a feudal archaic look to the scene. Since I was not able to find time to get the bump mapping done on the log desk I resorted to a dark atmosphere. I used very dark textures with focused lighting to focus the scene. With the drill tool I was able to carve random lines along the desk giving it the slight appears of being cut at with a knife. Second problem I had was from my solution to my first problem. Since the lighting was such a key element to the scene it was hard to work on it in different workspaces. My monitor at home is quite a bit brighter than most monitors. And my roommates monitor is quite a bit darker than most. Seeing the scene from different monitors really ruined the mood I was trying to set. To solve this I did several renderings at different light levels to see how it looked on both monitors. Once I found an equivalent point where the mood was mostly captured on both monitors I used that as my standard light settings. As a following up I might render one more time using the school’s lab to get the perfect lighting to match their brightness.
