Mike Schulz Desk Scene
 Beautiful Disaster
Inspiration

My inspiration for this piece was to try to explain a little bit about myself.  My desk that I made is similar to the desk I have at home.  My computer desk is a nice simple desk covered with a lot of stuff.  I’m a history major, and I constantly have books, and papers scattered around my desk.  People who look at my desk may not understand why I keep my desk so messy.  Despite all the apparent chaos I manage to get what I need, and I know exactly where everything is.  For these reasons I titled my scene beautiful disaster.  Due to time constraints, my desk might not be as messy as my desk at home but the point comes across.  In my scene I wanted to keep the area around the desk to be simple, and soft.  The computer is the only object I didn’t create.  Some of the books and papers are pictures that I scanned, and are actually pictures of the books and papers I have at home.

Problems and Solutions

I have had numerous problems throughout this project.  I didn’t find and helpful tutorials on my scene, and used lab time to ask questions.  The major setback I had was trying to impose my own pictures into the scene.  For some reason LightWave didn’t like my targa files.  They would show up in Modeler and Layout, but not in the final render.  My final choice was to use jpeg files for my pictures and this solved the problem.  Another problem I had was with my carpet.  I experimented with various textures and layers, and bump map to create what I thought was a good carpet.  It seemed to look okay in Modeler, but when I rendered it with all the settings up it didn’t look like a carpet.  Running out of time I solved the carpet problem by using the carpet image and making some slight adjustments.

References

I managed to get through this scene without using any tutorials other than the ones we learned in class.  Mainly because I didn’t find any that I wanted to use in my scene.
