Robin O'Connor Desk Scene
 untitled
Inspiration

My idea for this project was to mix adult problems and concepts with humorous, childlike imagery.  What is being depicted here is an overworked legoman passed out in an alcoholic haze.  His empty glass is a hint as to why he is passed out on his desk (he’s not just tired).  I chose to use a legoman in this scene (instead of a realistic person) for two reasons: it adds whimsy and humor to an otherwise serious and rather grim image, and it is a whole lot easier to model than an organic person.

Problems and Solutions

Most of the problems that I ran into during the course of making this scene had to do with editing the surfaces. I sisn;t like any of the prefabricated textures that I found in Lightwave or online, so I went ahead and experimented with Lightwave’s Procedural textures, and found that they provided much more realistic and varied effects, without all the pixilation that image textures incurred.  I also had to spend a long time tweaking the luminosity, reflection, and other surface settings for the lampshade before actually getting it to look like frosted green glass.  The final problem I ran into was that I did my final render in Lightwave Discovery Edition, due to lab availability issues, and apparently Discovery Edition has no capacity to load the appropriate plug-ins for render output.  What I had to do to solve that problem was to go into Render Options, and under the Output tab check “output RGB.”  In all honesty, I don’t know what the intended function of this option is, but it automatically outputs your render to a .TGA file, which can then be converted to a .jpg in Photoshop.  The only issue with this that I couldn’t get around was that it puts a weird checkerboard pattern on your render.
