Steve Liebenberg Desk Scene
 Calm Before The Storm
Inspiration

I wanted to create a scene on my dream boat.  In this case it’s a large yacht.  During the course of planning for this scene there have been a lot of hurricanes in the Caribbean.  I wanted to portray a scene of comfort and serenity juxtaposed with a factor of something ominous and jarring. The fact that hurricanes come from such calm conditions known as the Doldrums relates much to life itself.  For example, coming from the relative calm of summer going into the tempestuous school year can be represented by this metaphorical scene.

In this scene I’ve tried to emulate natural lighting and conversely use some interior lights creating a mood of calm and wellbeing.  I took these factors and subtlety juxtaposed them with the coming of the tempest on the laptop screen.

Problems and Solutions

The biggest problem that I ran into was render time.  It has caused a lot of stress in my life.  I had to abort render after I let it go overnight.  Actually, I’ve already rendered a scene that I may have to use.  But, as I am writing this my computer is chugging away on a render that I hope will be finished by lab in two hours.  My solution was to drop the refraction indexes, take off volumetric lighting on one of the lights, and drop the anti-aliasing to low.

Other issues were dealing with textures, the best solution that I found was to bug Clarke and more advanced students.

All in all I’m happy with my first 3D modeling project.  However, I will revisit my scene and make alterations.

And to sum up, most of my success were met through hours of tinkering with the program.
