Inspiration

At some point in time in a dream I had, my friends and I threw rocks at some lions up a path. When the lions got angry and gave chase we all scrambled for the nearby trees. Climbing to the top I found that day had not only turned to night, but there was a whole community of people living in the trees. I got onto the porch of the house in the tree I was climbing, turned and sat. The porch was dimly lit by candles and the view over the ocean was amazing. Then I woke up.

Problems and Solutions

Problem1: Boolean tool. Apparently the Boolean tool is not something to rely on even for the most simple of tasks. Lightwave was not able to subtract a small cylinder from a larger one. This was in an attempt to make the wax near the wick of a candle to appear as melted away.
Solution1: To solve this problem, I used the knife tool to segment the vertical parts of a cylinder about 4 times. I then selected the points creating the top edge, scaled them down and moved them into the appropriate position. This was repeated for the rest of the sections, scaling and moving accordingly.

Problem2: The walls of the room are created by a box that was inverted by using the F key. Therefore, the back wall with the giant door/window showed no thickness.
Solution2: Discovered the extrude tool.

Problem3: The porch has a very dark background to compete with. I wanted to highlight the tops of the rails with moonlight to add more contrast and realism. Specularity and glossiness could not remedy the problem. Neither could an additional light, as the light would illuminate too much of the scene and ruin the picture.
Solution3: None found.
